Success Story: Edward Martin

Edward Martin, an Intergenerational Survivor from Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation, overcame challenges with an FG Foundation scholarship, pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Victoria. Set to graduate in fall 2023, Edward expresses gratitude to the FG Foundation, his family, supportive husband, professors, and Listuguj First Nation. His inspiring journey embodies the impact of FG Foundation in empowering individuals to achieve academic success and create positive change within their communities.

Success Story: Smith's Landing First Nation

The "Journey to my Best Self" program, tailored for the Akaitcho region, including Smith's Landing First Nation, Salt River First Nation, and Northwest Territories Métis, fosters community and personal development. Emphasizing healing and reconciliation, the culture-based initiative engages participants in workshops addressing intergenerational residential school traumas. Through activities like talking circles, traditional teachings, and arts lessons, including moose hide tanning and crafting, the program empowers individuals to identify wellness goals, reconnect with Dene values, and build a positive future. With a focus on recognizing personal value, the program enables participants to tap into inner strengths and grow as resilient Dene community members.

The NIB Trust [now FG Foundation] has enabled people to access education programs, to participate in cultural activities and language revitalization initiatives. These activities help to address the damage done by the residential school system and other harmful government policies. This is Reconciliation in action. I am grateful … for their visionary work in our country.
